One Step Forward on Immigration Policy

One Step Forward on Immigration Policy

This morning, President Obama and our former Governor and current Secretary of Homeland Security provided much-needed relief to millions of children of undocumented immigrants. We are a nation founded on the premise of accepting all peoples. This is not a partisan issue, this is a real issue that tasks us every day and it is time that real measures are taken to make a positive impact on the lives of millions. This is not the end, it is only the beginning of the real discussion.

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

What President Obama did, while a temporary solution, removes a cloud that has been hanging over these children’s heads. Now they have the opportunity to more fully contribute to our great nation, legally allowed to live and work in this country – not amnesty. They can now be contributing scientists, doctors, teachers, social workers, and all the other things that help make our nation and our society great.

Here in Arizona we see this issue on a daily basis, with legislators attempting to take matters into their own hands. These people, after all, are people. These are our neighbors, our friends, even some of our soldiers, and today is a large step towards bringing the real issue to the forefront: human rights. Thank you, Mr. President, for finally starting a discussion with real solutions to the entire topic of illegal immigration so that they have the opportunity to earn citizenship as did many others who came here legally.
